A Journey into the Depths of History in Aswan, the Pearl of the Nile (with Rah Tours)

We recently had the opportunity to embark on a memorable journey to southern Egypt and the beautiful city of Aswan with Rah Tours. Egypt, the land of pharaohs and pyramids, has always been a fascinating destination for explorers of history and culture, and this time, Aswan, a shining gem at its southernmost point, was our host with its countless attractions. This travelogue narrates our personal experience of this amazing trip; a journey to a city where the majestic Nile flows through the sandy hills and history is visible in every corner. On this trip, with the accompaniment of Rah Tours' experienced guides, we had a unique opportunity to discover the depths of the history and culture of this region.

Aswan, a City in the Embrace of the Nile:

Aswan, located at the southernmost point of Egypt, where the magnificent Nile passes through the sandy hills, is home to about one and a half million people. This city is not only the center of the Aswan Governorate but also a gateway to the rich history and culture of ancient Egypt and Nubia. The hot and dry desert climate, with a blue sky and bright sunshine, is a distinctive feature of this region. Walking along the Nile, while a cool breeze blows from the river, is an unforgettable experience. Sailing on feluccas (traditional Egyptian sailboats) on the Nile, watching the sunset over the river, and visiting the small and beautiful islands are among the popular activities in Aswan. The bustling local markets, with the scent of oriental spices and the vibrant colors of fabrics, take you to another world. In these markets, you can buy Nubian handicrafts, local spices, and other souvenirs.

Soaring Obelisks, Reminders of Ancient Splendor:

Obelisks, these colossal stone columns, have been a symbol of power and eternity in ancient Egypt. Imagine, monolithic granite stones were extracted with great difficulty from the nearby quarries, near Aswan. These quarries, the remains of which are still visible, show how the ancient Egyptians used very primitive tools such as stone hammers and wooden levers to separate huge stones from the mountain. Workers with very basic tools worked for hours and days on these hard stones, carving them, polishing them, and then, using amazing methods, with sleds and large boats, transported these huge columns to distant temples. Each obelisk contains a story of engineering, art, and the beliefs of the ancient Egyptians. The unfinished state of some of these obelisks in the quarries, such as the Unfinished Obelisk, which is the largest known obelisk, provides a unique opportunity to understand how this complex process worked and shows how the ancient Egyptians intended to build an obelisk about 42 meters high and weighing more than 1,000 tons.

The Aswan High Dam, a Symbol of Modernity and Development:

The Aswan High Dam, a huge structure built during the era of Gamal Abdel Nasser and with the cooperation of the Soviet Union, is not only a symbol of the progress and development of modern Egypt but has also had a profound impact on the lives of the people of this region. By controlling the Nile's floods, this dam has provided the possibility of sustainable agriculture and is also an important source of electricity generation. Lake Nasser, which has formed behind this dam, is one of the largest artificial lakes in the world and has created a beautiful and unique landscape. Visiting this dam and lake provides an opportunity to understand the impact of large engineering projects on the environment and human life.

Nubian Villages, a Rainbow of Culture and Authenticity:

A trip to Aswan would not be complete without visiting the Nubian villages. The Nubian people, with their rich and unique culture, have lived in this region for centuries. The colorful houses with beautiful paintings, traditional clothes, passionate music, and exquisite handicrafts are just some of the attractions of this region. The Nubian language, which has roots in African languages, is still spoken by the people of this region. The warm hospitality of the Nubians and getting acquainted with their traditional lifestyle creates a unique and memorable experience for every visitor. Walking through the narrow alleys of these villages is like a journey into the heart of African history and culture.

The Magnificent Temple of Abu Simbel, a Masterpiece in the Heart of the Rock:

Near Aswan, the Temple of Abu Simbel, one of the most amazing ancient monuments of Egypt, stands out. This temple, built by Ramses II, one of the most powerful pharaohs of Egypt, in the 13th century BC, was built to commemorate his military victories and also in honor of his wife, Nefertari. The two large temples carved into the rocks, with huge statues and breathtaking wall paintings, leave every viewer in admiration. The rescue of this temple from the waters of Lake Nasser in the 1960s was an international project carried out by UNESCO and demonstrates the global importance of this historical site. Twice a year, on February 22nd and October 22nd, the sun's rays penetrate into the main temple and illuminate the face of the statue of Ramses II, a phenomenon that has continued for thousands of years and shows the high knowledge of astronomy of the ancient Egyptians. This phenomenon, known as the "Sun Miracle," attracts many tourists to this region every year.

Concluding Remarks:

A trip to Aswan is a journey into the depths of history, culture, and natural beauty. A trip that goes beyond visiting a few ancient monuments and provides an opportunity to immerse yourself in a different world and create an unforgettable experience. With a combination of rich history, authentic Nubian culture, and the natural beauty of the Nile, Aswan captivates every visitor, and its memories will remain in your mind forever. This city is not only a part of Egyptian history but also a part of human history, and visiting it will be a valuable and educational experience. This trip with Rah Tours was a special and organized experience that allowed us to enjoy every moment of it to the fullest.
