Sleeping in a Train Car: My Experience at the Tatamagouche Train Station Inn

The Tatamagouche Train Station is located in the quaint village of Tatamagouche, on the north shore of Nova Scotia. The station was built in 1887 by the Intercolonial Railway of Canada, and served as a passenger and freight depot until 1974. The station was then abandoned and left to decay, until a local couple bought it in 1989 and decided to restore it and turn it into an inn. They also acquired seven vintage rail cars from various sources, and converted them into guest rooms. The result is a charming and quirky place that combines history, art, and hospitality.

The station itself has four guest rooms, each with its own theme and decor. There is the Station Master’s Room, which has a queen bed and a private bathroom; the Telegraph Room, which has two twin beds and a shared bathroom; the Waiting Room, which has a double bed and a shared bathroom; and the Luggage Room, which has a double bed and a private bathroom. All the rooms have original features such as hardwood floors, fireplaces, and antique furniture. The station also has a common area with a library, a lounge, and a dining room where breakfast is served every morning.

The rail cars are parked on the tracks behind the station, and each one has its own personality and style. There is the Caboose, which has a double bed and a bunk bed; the Boxcar, which has two double beds; the Tanker Car, which has a queen bed; the Crane Car, which has a queen bed and a single bed; the Flanger Car, which has two double beds; the Sleeper Car, which has four single beds; and the Dining Car, which has two double beds and a kitchenette. All the rail cars have private bathrooms, electric heat, air conditioning, and Wi-Fi. The rail cars are decorated with memorabilia and artwork related to trains and railways.

The Tatamagouche Train Station is more than just a place to sleep. It is also a museum and a gallery that showcases the history and culture of rail travel in Canada. The station has many displays and exhibits that tell the story of the Intercolonial Railway, the people who worked there, and the passengers who traveled through there. You can see old photographs, maps, tickets, uniforms, tools, luggage, and more. The station also hosts art shows and events throughout the year, featuring local artists and musicians.

The Tatamagouche Train Station is also a great base to explore the surrounding area. The village of Tatamagouche is a charming place with shops, cafes, restaurants, pubs, and galleries. You can also visit the Creamery Square Heritage Centre, which has exhibits on the history of dairy farming and ice cream making in Nova Scotia. There are many scenic trails and parks nearby, such as the Trans Canada Trail, the Butter Trail, the Balmoral Grist Mill Provincial Park, and the Northumberland Strait.
